Installing and Configuring Miditzer with LinuxSampler on Puppy


Part 1. Download and Setup Puppy with LinuxSampler

  1. Follow the steps given on this page: PuppyLinuxSampler.htm .

Part 2. Configure WINE (Windows compatability layer)

  1. Click on Menu > Utility > Wine Config
  2. Select the Graphics tab
  3. De-select the "Allow the window manager to decorate the windows" option (if you don't do this then you won't have access to Miditzer's Configuration menu)
  4. Select the Audio tab
  5. Click OK on the warning
  6. Make sure that only the ALSA check box has been selected
  7. Click OK on the bottom of the Wine Config window

Part 3. Configure Qsampler with the Ranks needed for the Miditzer Style 216

  1. Download the required UGSF ranks from http://www.golfcap-rouge.qc.ca/mdz/ugsf.asp or http://prosites-allmanmusic.homestead.com/UniversalVTPOGig.html
  2. Load Qjackctl, make sure that JACK has succesfully started
  3. Load Qsampler, make sure that the connection with linuxsampler is succesful
  4. Configure the Audio and MIDI device as described in PuppyLinuxSampler.htm
  5. Now load the GIG files in the order presented at http://www.golfcap-rouge.qc.ca/mdz/ugsf.asp
  6. Make sure that the MIDI Channel selected matches the Miditzer configuration
  7. Once all 16 GIG files have been loaded and configured, save the configuration as Miditzer216.lscp
  8. Connect the output of LinuxSampler to the System audio in Qjackctl
  9. If your keyboard is still connected to LinuxSampler from the Puppy LinuxSampler test click on the ALSA tab and disconnect them.

Part 4. Install  Miditzer

  1. Download Midizter Style 216 from http://www.virtualorgan.com/Default.asp?Page=64 
  2. In the file naviation window (click on the File icon on the desktop), navigate to where the Miditzer installation file is located and right-click on Miditzer216_0881Install.exe and select File > Set Run Action
  3. In the "Enter a shell command" box type in "wine " in front of the "$@" [so it should read "wine $@"]
  4. Click on Use Command
  5. Now click on the Miditzer216_0881Install.exe file
  6. The installation sequence should begin. At the final screen of the installation, de-select the option to run Midizter immediately after installing (We need to configure a few other things first).  
  7. Once the installation is complete click on the File icon on the desktop.
  8. Look for the "Miditzer Style 216.desktop" file. Drag and drop the file from the file navigation window onto the desktop
  9. Right click on the Miditzer Style 216.desktop icon on the desktop and select Edit Item
  10. Delete the ".desktop" from the end of the name
  11. Click on OK
  12. Click on the Miditzer Style 216 icon
  13. Midizter should now load, giving a few warning messages.

Part 5. Configure  Miditzer

  1. Once Miditzer had loaded, click on the yellow M icon on the top left corner of the window and select Miditzer Settings
  2. Configure your MIDI inputs and channels
  3. Click on the Output tab
  4. Select LinuxSampler - Port 0 in the Set all MIDI output devices: drop down
  5. Change the Sleigh Bells MIDI channel to 15
  6. Change the Tremolo method to Modulation controller
  7. Click OK

Part 6. Set Volume Levels in Qsampler

  1. Play a few notes in each rank and get a feel for the default volume levels, make a note of the rank that is the softest and then make a list of the ranks that need to have their volume levels reduced to properly play with the softest rank.
  2. Select the softest sounding rank and a rank that needs volume adjustment together
  3. Minimize the Miditzer window
  4. Maximise the Qsampler window
  5. Play some notes and adjust the volume level of the louder rank until the volume level sounds right
  6. Minimize the Qsampler window
  7. De-select the rank that you have just adjusted and select the next rank
  8. Adjust the volume control of each rank in Qsampler until your Miditzer sounds pleasing
  9. Click on the Save icon to save the volume level changes  

Part 7. Adding Reverb

  1. To use Jack Rack and gverb go to jackrack.htm
  2. To use jconv Convolution reverb go to jconv.htm

Appendix 1. Finding the default MIDI files

  1. Click on the File icon on the desktop
  2. Click on the Eye icon to unhide the .wine directory
  3. Click on the .wine directory
  4. Click on drive_c, then Program Files, then Miditzer Style 216
  5. Open another file browser by clicking on the File icon on the desktop for a second time
  6. Drag and drop the MIDI files from the one file window to the other, selecting Copy when prompted
  7. You will now be able to load the MIDI files through the Miditzer interface
